Sold out and filled with boys, the Triple Rock offered Eyedea and Abilities a sober, yet amped audience for their homecoming show. SecTor7G, an MC and DJ duo from Circle Pines, Minn. opened the show and knocked my leg warmers off. On the mic, Impulse is a lunatic who sees no limitations in intonation. Slightly similar to Eyedea, Impulse comes with a raspier and more threatening streak. His eyes wide under a black hoodie, this man's energy and excitement was addicting; enough so that I didn't dare lose eye or ear contact with him.
By 11:30 E&A took over the stage with "Birth of a Fish", Eyedea was warm in his winter jacket and furry hat (complete with earflaps). Pawing the air, Eyedea rapped loud, using his hands to keep the rhythm of his raps. I loved watching his wands shake, building up fury as the song went on or quickened its pace. It's never easy to keep up with Eyedea, and if you're trying to digest every word, you're a fool. Together with DJ Abilities, I was dizzy with amusement by the third song.
I saw E&A at their reunion show in August and am positive it was one of my favorite shows of the year. This show wasn't quite up to par, but putting in perspective the height of the bar, it was still a great performance and I still want Eyedea to rap on my face... if that's even possible.
Over the course of the set, the duo cranked out a list of musical gifts, including "Paradise" and "Now". I loved when Eyedea took time to turn around, barking his words while looking straight at his DJ—it was obvious the two friends were having a good time. DJ Abilities always looks smooth doing his thing in the back and burning up a Twinkie of calories while scratching the tables. Eyedea kept joking about Abilities' "guns," and wondering if they were sore from all the work. Whether he was fatigued or not, the sound was to live for.
Mid-set, Carnage and Kristoff Krane joined the stage of talented artists and spit out a pool of true freestyle harmony. The beat-boxing genius combined with the raw pronunciation of Eyedea makes for one happy me. Even Eyedea remarked how great they all sound together. Laughing, he said, "Should've saved that for the end."
E&A are amazing musicians and the crowd ate up every minute. Yet still, the room was incredibly attentive and grew silent between each song, anticipating what would come next. I don't think it wasn't necessarily on purpose that no one spoke after the applause, brains were just simply trying to catch up and regain consciousness.
